This Town Needs Guns are an math/indie-rock band originating from Oxford in the United Kingdom. They were formed in 2004, and are currently signed to the Big Scary Monsters Recording Company (UK), Sargent House (USA), Rallye (Japan), and Yellow Ghost Records (Australia). The band have built a huge online fanbase with many people excited by their technical and clever instrumentation. In mid-2008 a rumour circulated that guitarist, Tim Collis, was taught to play by [[[Victor Villareal]] (Owls, Cap'n Jazz), something which is yet to be confirmed or denied by the band.Their debut full length album, 'Animals', was released in UK via Big Scary Monsters Recording Company in October 2008 and shortly after in the US via Sargent House Records. The band will be touring the UK, Europe and US throughout 2009.Musical styleOver the years the band's musical style has progressed and changed, although the focal point of their style has been the impressive guitar work of Tim Collis interspersed with solid, and at points highly complex, drumming and sparse, melodic bass. Early releases however, featured more distorted chord progressions, as well as a strong focus on the interlinking melodies of both Collis and Smith's guitars. More recently however, the band's music has become more technical; making more use of asymetrical time signatures and complex accenting between guitar and drums, plus an abandonment of distortion and guitar effects, giving way to more complex melodies. Pianist Jody Prewett also had a brief spell in the band. The band cites influences of other bands such as Owls, American Football, and Make Believe.[1]The band I Was a Cub Scout cites This Town Needs Guns as an influence.[2]
