The Bay Area has long been credited with creating new trends in music and although attention has been pulled away after the Hyphy movement seemingly died down the collective known, as Fly Street Gang are here to bring the music industry back to the Bay Area.
Fly Street Gang was created in the rough streets of East Oakland and consists of members Tah MF, Young Phantom, and Jay West. Each member of the group has enjoyed success as solo artists and like any other super group can hold their own on a track. After bursting onto the Bay Area music scene in 2006 Fly Street Gang began a tireless campaign of networking and recording, which led to their release of their first mix tape “Guns and Rose Gold.” Following the release of “Guns and Rose Gold” Fly Street Gang released “Fly NonStop” which boasts over 100,000 downloads. These mix tapes combined with a marketing push both online and across the United States has led to Fly Street having three of their songs not only featured on the legendary Radio Station 106 KMEL but also seeing their singles featured on such notable websites as; HotnewHipHop, GlobalGrind, Worldstarhiphop and Allhiphop.com.
Tah MF developed a passion for music early on in life and began writing around his 7th grade year; he really didn’t take it seriously until he was asked to perform in Los Angeles at the famous BB Kings. The excitement from performing in front of a group of people gave Tah the motivation he needed to make music his full time hustle and he immediately jumped in the studio perfecting his flow. Studying lyricists that came before him like Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z, Yukmouth, Ice Cube, and LL Cool J Tah developed a amazing ability to rap lyrics that would cause his listeners to play his music back just so they could repeat his last line. While he didn’t rush to appear on other artist’s songs Tah made it a point to always work with artists from his family and immediate camp which led to the formation of Fly Street Gang.
Jay West AKA Clevah was born and raised in East Oakland but moved in 1995 to Vacaville where he lived until 2003. Spending time in both of these cities gave him lyrics and real life experiences that listeners from all across the Bay Area can relate too. Citing Tupac “All Eyez On Me” as the first CD he ever owned is a true testament to the kind of classic music that would later influence Jay West’s style and work ethic. After moving back to Oakland in 2003 Jay West wouldn’t get into the studio until 2005 when he recorded his first raps. Although he enjoyed the raps he didn’t take it seriously until 2006 when he learned how to properly format a song and write bars. With his newfound passion he joined Tah MF and Young Phantom to form Fly Street Gang.
Young Phantom is described by all who meet him as creative and confident and whether you are listening to his innovative lyrics on the “Guns and Rose Gold” Mix Tape or you are watching him perform live you immediately understand why he is described that way. Born in San Leandro but raised in East Oakland Young Phantom grew up around a family that was already involved in recording music. As he was growing up Young Phantom had the unique privilege of being able to write music while seeking advice from his already experienced family members. This allowed for Young Phantom to perfect his flow and writing skills and when he finally stepped into a recording booth in 2004 he knew right away that creating music would be his life long passion.
The Bay Area super group Fly Street Gang has firmly planted their flag in the Bay Area soil, and with intentions their single “Knock it out” dominating radio stations and websites across the United States, it’s no secret that the Fly Street Gang are bringing the music industry back to the Bay Area.
