Long Island has given rise to such superstars as Billy Joel, Public Enemy, Mariah Carey, Busta Rhymes and Glen Cove’s Ashanti. It may be something in the air or it may be something in the water, but whatever “It” is, this 22 year-old singer/songwriter’s got it! Hailing now from Freeport, New York by way of Jay-Z’s own Marcy Projects, comes the young man who proudly boasts “I got next!” Put yo’ hands together and give it up for…Corey Gibson! Born in Brooklyn, New York, Corey lived in the Marcy Projects until the age of twelve. He started singing in church at the age of seven. Shortly after, he found himself singing the majority the youth choir’s solos. Intrigued by the emotional response his performances received, he realized being a singer was definitely in his future. In 1998, Corey Gibson relocated to Freeport, New York and Long Island had no idea what was it was in for. Snippets of star status began to arise during his time at Freeport High School. Singing in the school choir was to be expected but being chosen as the emissary to represent the school in the Nassau County Chorus was a humongous honor. Corey performed in numerous shows and was the 1st Place Winner in the school’s talent showcase in 2001 and 2002. He has been featured in the local paper and represented his 2003 graduating class by singing an original piece at the ceremony. Corey has been blessed to have performed on stage, at such venues as the esteemed Tilles Center and the prestigious Carnegie Hall. However, for this young superstar to be, nothing has been more exhilarating than winning “Amateur Night” on the legendary “Showtime At The Apollo” in January 2002. Corey’s television debut was so memorable that he was recognized and approached by a number of teenagers at a recent taping of BET’s 106 & Park. “It”, is what he’s got--personality, persistence, presence and talent. Congregations of church folks, music and chorus teachers, the patience-free Apollo crowd, and the most critical of all…his peers, can’t all be wrong. Everyone is diggin’ Corey Gibson. In addition to his list of accolades, Corey is still creating his legacy. He currently attends Five Towns College, majoring in music production and performance. He is also studying piano, guitar and voice. Corey Gibson is among a handful of people who received a performing arts scholarship (the only one from Nassau County to do so) and is the only freshman to have been accepted into the Five Towns college’s prestigious “Chamber singers chorale”. Corey is presently in the studio integrating his textbook applications with the practical applications of recording. Twenty-two and focused is hard to come by but twenty-two, focused and talented…“priceless”. We see what everyone else sees. Corey Gibson’s got “it” and he’s got next! .. .. ..
