talian born & London raised, Sara Schiralli is the award winning, talented Singer Songwriter, who has the power to silence a room with her delicate voice.
If you ever have the good fortune of meeting Sara, you’ll realise that behind her idiosyncratic and bewitching persona, she is very delicate and humble. She is remarkably unaware of her vast talent as a singer, songwriter and musician. Not flippant, blasé and arrogant but modest and thankful.
Having written poetry from the very young age of 8, Sara never dreamt of becoming a singer. It wasn’t until a friend forced her to put her poems to music and dragged her to an open mic night that Sara realised she had more to offer. ‘The first time I played my songs in public was at an open mic night and there was a rock band on before me. The crowd were so loud and drunk. My set was really mellow and acoustic and I made the whole audience totally silent. I couldn’t believe it. It felt really powerful and magical’.
When playing live, Sara and her band have the feel of a gypsy skiffle band tinged with the pop sensibility of Goldfrapp, and the delicate and emotive influence of Leonard Cohen. While Sara graces the stage and draws in people’s attention, her band have an infectious rhythm to get people dancing. On her more mellow acoustic tracks, Sara’s voice floats over the music, plucking away at people’s heartstrings.
Sara’s album ‘Bang Bang’ is made from astonishingly pure songs. The albums title track, Bang Bang ‘reminds me a bit of the beginning of Radiohead's "Exit Music (for a movie)"—haunting and beautiful’ writes Rachael Combe, Editor of Elle Magazine USA. Songs of realisation, fear, muted joy, loss and growth have rarely sounded so inspiring. Comparisons to Fiona Apple and Cat Power are illustrative but incomplete. Her sound is like a prohibition-era New York revue bar owned by Joni Mitchell but curated by CSS.
Sara was recently crowned Best New Artist at the Diesel U:Music awards. Beating off competition from the Noisettes and Ida Maria, and a unanimous decision from the judges saw Sara win the accolade that in previous years has gone to groundbreaking acts such as Mylo and Tom Vek.
